SSD vs HDD? What is the difference between these two?

May 10, 2022

You must have heard of the term SSD and HDD-Powered web hosting services while looking for a web hosting server for your website. However, you must think of the differences between these two. And why most web hosting providers often suggest you go for SSD-Powered web hosting solutions. In this blog, we will tell you the main difference between SSD vs HDD.

Moreover, the basic, difference between SSD and HDD is that a Solid State Drive stores the data in integrated circuits, and a Hard Disk Drive stores data magnetically, through spinning disks. In this, post we will compare the, based on their speed, adaptability, technical modernity, and user experience.

But first, let’s understand some basics!

What is SSD vs HDD?

A solid-state drive (SSD) is a solid-state storage device that users integrated circuit assemblies to store data persistently, typically using flash memory, and functioning as secondary storage in the hierarchy of computer storage. In addition, it is also known as the semiconductor storage device, a solid-state device, or a solid-state disk. Compared with electromechanical drives, SSDs are typically more resistant to physical shock, run silently, and have higher IOPS and lower latency.

A Hard Disk Drive or HDD is an electromechanical data storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage and one or more rigid rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material. The platters are paired with magnetic heads, usually arranged on a moving actuator arm, which read and write data to the platter surfaces.

Comparison between SSD vs HDD

A Hard Disk Drive is the commonly used storage disk, which uses a moving read/write head to access data. This is the traditional type of storage unit which is used in computer devices.

If we look at the speed, SSD has a faster processing speed, while HDD is low in comparison. But SSD has low latency, and HDD has high latency rituals. And the main reason why these both are on market is the storage. However, when it comes to capacity, SSDs for computers are available in 120 GB to 4 TB capacities. And HDDs can go anywhere from 250 GB to 14 TB.

In terms of weight, SSD is lighter in comparison to HDD. This is because no external mechanics of the motor is attached to the drive. However, HDD is heavier than SSD. No motion results in less use of electricity or power while using these, but because of the spinning platters, more electricity and power are consumed.

In terms of cost, SSD is a modern storage drive and is costlier. And HDD is a traditional storage drive and is a bit cheaper in comparison to SSD. And last and most importantly, in case of safety, SSD is more reliable in comparison to HDD. Since, in case of any error in the drive, the entire HDD may crash and result in loss of data. This makes it less reliable.
